The biggest threat to network marketing isn’t the FTC, Amazon, or affiliate marketing. It’s ourselves. Imagine this: you’re not in the network marketing profession, and you come across a dramatic post bashing another company or leader. Does this repel or attract you? Whether you’re right or wrong doesn’t matter to someone outside NWM. When we bash others in our industry, it makes us look unprofessional and disorganized. We know how great this profession is, but these actions deter many potential customers/recruits.
A Self-Inflicted Problem
The issue lies not with external factors but within our community. Negative posts and public disputes create a perception of instability and infighting. For those looking in from the outside, this can be a major turn-off. They see a lack of unity and professionalism, which makes them hesitant to join.
Know Your Audience
In the words of the great Jim Rohn, “If you chase the birds, you leave the field.” This quote perfectly encapsulates the importance of understanding your audience. I have coached countless leaders and many in network marketing on social media strategies, and most think they know their audience—but even top leaders often don’t.
If your target audience isn’t those already in network marketing, why focus on internal drama in your posts? This type of content can alienate potential customers/recruits who aren’t familiar with the industry. They rarely remember the positive posts but almost always remember the negative ones. Even posts meant to offer condolences about a company going out of business or switching to an affiliate model can do more harm than good. Why? Because they still highlight instability within the profession to those who don’t understand the profession.
If your goal is to attract new customers/distributors, focusing on the positives and the value of the profession is far more effective.
Setting a Positive Tone
As top leaders, we set the tone for the entire industry. Let’s focus on building each other up, fostering a positive environment, and demonstrating the true value of network marketing. By doing so, we can attract more people to this incredible profession and ensure its growth and success.
We need to reflect on how our actions impact the broader perception of our profession. It’s essential to project an image of unity and professionalism, showcasing the positive aspects of network marketing and the opportunities it offers.
In conclusion, the most significant threat to our profession is not external but internal. It’s the way we present ourselves and interact with one another. By focusing on positive, inclusive messaging and understanding our audience, we can continue to grow and thrive in this ever-evolving industry.
