Leaders
I’m one of the biggest advocates for personal development. I’ve written 12 books, recorded nearly 200 podcast episodes, and spent years coaching people through it.
BUT… I also believe personal development can easily turn into what I call Procrastination Development.
Prior to network marketing, a lot of people were used to being told what to do by bosses, teachers, or parents. Now that they’re their own boss, there’s a massive confusion between being busy and being productive. Many people become obsessed with personal development, thinking that continually learning is progress. But here’s the truth that we all ALREADY KNOW as LEADERS …
➡️ Real learning happens in action. It’s easy to get stuck in the endless loop of reading, watching, or listening to personal development content, but the real growth comes from applying what you learn.
I’ll admit, in my first 18 months, I devoured over 100 books and audios. I needed that. I had to get those positive voices in my head. When I worked out, I listened to personal development. When I drove, it was personal development. It became my constant coach.
And that’s great. But here’s the lesson for all of us as leaders: we must teach our teams that learning isn’t enough. We need to create a culture where personal development isn’t just encouraged—it’s applied.
Here’s a few ways to do that:
- Have book clubs within your team.
- Create recommended reading lists—categorized for different levels (mindset, leadership, skills in network marketing, etc.).
- Make it clear in your team documents: learning without action is just procrastination.
- Don’t just communicate it in DOCUMENTS but constantly emphasize WORKING in this BUSINESS is TALKING to NEW PEOPLE.
I often use the analogy of playing the piano or basketball. You don’t get good just by watching YouTube tutorials. You learn by doing—over and over again.
So today, as you think about your own personal development and that of your team’s, ask yourself: Are we obsessed with progress or just with learning?
Good leaders have vision. Great leaders give vision. Let’s make sure we’re leading our teams toward action and not just personal development procrastination.
Legends what are some things you do with your teams?
